Label Adhesives Explained: Permanent, Removable, Freezer, and All-Temp

Nobody notices a label adhesive until a label lifts at a corner, slides off a cold bottle, or leaves gummy residue on a returned tote. The adhesive is a real engineering choice, and it hinges on two questions: what surface, and what temperature?

The four working classes

• Permanent: the default. Bonds fast and stays. Trying to remove it destroys the label — which for product labeling is exactly what you want.
• Removable: engineered to release cleanly without residue. Essential for promotions applied on top of packaging, price marking, and labels on returnable containers.
• Freezer / cold-temp: formulated to grab onto cold, sometimes frost-touched surfaces and keep holding below freezing. Standard adhesives applied cold never build a full bond.
• All-temp: the versatile middle ground — applies in cool conditions and performs across a wide range. Common in logistics, where a label travels from a refrigerated dock to a hot truck.

Surface energy: why some plastics reject labels

Surfaces have a property called surface energy that determines how well adhesives wet out and grip. Glass and PET are easy. Polyethylene and polypropylene — the plastics most squeeze bottles and buckets are made of — are low-energy and harder to bond. Textured or powder-coated surfaces are harder still. For these you want a high-tack permanent adhesive, and it's worth telling your supplier exactly what the container is made of when you quote.

Tell your supplier these four things

• The surface material (glass, PET, HDPE, corrugated, painted metal…)
• The application temperature — is the product cold when labeled?
• The service environment — freezer, fridge, outdoor sun, chemical exposure?
• Whether the label ever needs to come off cleanly

With those four answers, an experienced converter will land on the right adhesive the first time — and save you from discovering the wrong one in a customer complaint.
