Medical & Healthcare Labels
Hospitals, reference labs, and pharmacies consume label stock at a scale that surprises people outside healthcare. Most of that volume isn't specialty printed artwork — it's blank thermal rolls in very specific sizes, cores, and roll counts, feeding printers at pharmacy benches, phlebotomy carts, specimen receiving, and nurse stations. Someone has to convert that stock precisely, deliver it on schedule, and never let a department run dry.

That converting work is exactly what GL Labels has done for three decades. We die-cut and rewind thermal stock to the spec your printers already run, flexo-print the color stripes and borders that departments use to sort at a glance, and supply the matching ribbons — all from Tijuana, a short drive from the California border, at nearshore cost.
A word on scope, because it matters in this industry: we're a flexographic label converter, not a certified medical-device labeler. Consumable label stock, color-coded department labels, pharmacy and specimen labels, and printed product labels are squarely in our lane. Sterile or cleanroom-certified production, validated sterilization-indicator labels, and patient wristbands are not — tell us the requirement and we'll tell you plainly whether it's something we should quote.
Label applications
- Blank direct thermal rolls for pharmacy, phlebotomy, and specimen-receiving printers
- Thermal transfer stock for labels that must stay scannable through long-term storage
- Color-striped and color-bordered labels for department, shift, or priority coding
- Specimen, vial, and slide labels in small formats, including multi-across layouts
- Cold-storage and freezer-grade labels for sample and tissue archives
- Alcohol- and solvent-resistant stocks for clinical benches and carts
- Printed labels for pharmaceutical, OTC, and nutraceutical products
- Durable film labels for devices, instruments, and equipment asset tags
- Thermal transfer ribbons matched to each facestock
Technical specifications
| Print process | Flexographic 1–6 colors for preprinted formats; supplied blank for variable in-house printing |
| Facestocks | Direct thermal, thermal transfer, alcohol-resistant paper, white BOPP and PET film for durables |
| Adhesives | Permanent; freezer/cold-temp for sample archives; removable where labels must release cleanly |
| Small formats | Rotary dies down to vial and slide sizes; multi-across layouts to raise yield per roll |
| Roll conversion | 3/4", 1", and 3" cores; labels-per-roll and unwind position matched to your printers |
| Printer matching | Converted to the physical spec your Zebra, Datamax, Sato, or system printer runs today — send a sample or spec sheet |
| Ribbon pairing | Wax, wax-resin, or resin matched to the facestock so barcodes scan reliably |
| Supply model | Blanket POs with scheduled releases per facility or department |
Example applications
Standardizing stock across a health system
One agreed facestock, size, and core adopted across sites, drawn down against a blanket PO — instead of each department ordering its own spec and discovering mid-shift that the rolls don't fit the printer.
Color-coded department labels
Flexo-printed stripes and borders on otherwise blank thermal stock, so lab, pharmacy, and radiology sort by color at a glance while the variable data still prints in-house.
Cold-storage sample archives
Thermal transfer facestock with freezer-grade adhesive for vials and boxes that live below freezing for years and still have to scan on retrieval.
Frequently asked questions
Can you match the labels our printers already use?
Usually yes. Send us a sample roll or the spec — label size, core diameter, labels per roll, unwind direction, and facestock type — and we convert to match that physical specification. We match dimensions and materials; we don't certify compatibility with any particular hospital software system.
Do you make patient wristbands?
No. Wristbands are a different manufacturing process and we don't produce them. We supply pressure-sensitive labels and thermal roll stock, including labels applied to charts, specimens, and packaging.
What about labels for regulated medical devices or sterile products?
We're a flexographic converter without ISO 13485 certification or cleanroom production, so sterile-barrier labeling, validated sterilization-indicator labels, and similar regulated applications are outside what we should quote. Product and secondary-packaging labels, consumable thermal stock, and durable instrument or asset labels are well within it. Describe the application and we'll give you a straight answer before you spend time on a quote.
Why buy thermal label stock from Tijuana?
Because converting is a commodity operation where labor and overhead drive the price, and ours are Mexican while our shipping is domestic-US from a border location. Facilities buying blank stock by the case usually see the difference immediately, with a blanket PO and scheduled releases so nothing runs out.
Can you preprint patient or specimen data?
No — variable data belongs at the point of use, printed by your own thermal printers from your system. What we preprint is the fixed part: logos, field outlines, color coding, handling marks, and compliance text, leaving the variable area clean.
